Illuminating Yellow – Pantone’s 2021 Color Of The Year

Say hello to 2021! We’re already a few weeks into a brand new year. I hope you’re feeling as hopeful and optimistic about the future as I am! Have you started thinking about bright, uplifting color schemes for 2021? I’m planning to utilize Illuminating Yellow in my upcoming garden designs. It’s been named one of Pantone’s 2021 Colors of the Year!

The Pantone Color Institute has been selecting the Color Of The Year for the past 22 years. These selections reflect current design trends and broader “spirit of the times” considerations. Pantone is well qualified to make these selections as they standardize color swatches for the design industry. The Pantone Color Institute influences product development in many industries, including horticulture!

This year, Pantone selected 2 colors: Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray. This is only the 2nd time that two colors were chosen. These particular colors “highlight how different elements come together to express this message of strength and hopefulness.”

After a particularly trying year in 2020, this color combination is intended to celebrate resilience and hope. Illuminating Yellow symbolizes optimism, cheer and happiness. On the other hand, Ultimate Gray embodies strength and composure. I think we’re all ready for some good cheer and hope!

In addition, I have some gorgeous flower friends who can add some lovely illumination to your garden beds in 2021. Read on to learn more!

Illuminating Yellow Flowers

Rudbeckia ‘Viette’s Little Suzy’

Illuminating Yellow

Do you love Black Eyed Susans but are wary of its leggy nature overwhelming garden beds? I have the perfect plant for you! Rudbeckia ‘Viette’s Little Suzy’ is a compact, dwarf, highly floriferous black-eyed Susan that blooms beautifully in summer and fall! The medium-yellow blooms add big impact in the garden and Suzy’s green foliage turns a stunning mahogany in autumn.

 Achillea ‘Little Moonshine’

Achillea 'Little Moonshine'

Achillea millefolium ‘Little Moonshine’ beckons bees and butterflies to the garden! Unlike other yarrows, ‘Little Moonshine’ offers a compact habit that’s perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or mixed borders. Plus, the petite beauty blooms May through September, adding a bright burst of color to the landscape. ‘Little Moonshine’ may be small, but it adds big impact to gardens!⁣

‘Brilliant’ Igloo

Illuminating Yellow

Perennial mums, like our Dendrathema ‘Brilliant Igloo’, offer a great option for pretty autumn flowers. Add them to your garden beds to let them become well-established in cooler weather. Later on you’ll have big, pretty mounds of flowers in fall!⁣

Best of all, the Igloo series blooms brilliantly from late summer well into fall. After that, the plants require no pinching to maintain their uniform shape.

I hope this gives you some great ideas for adding some Illuminating Yellow in your garden design. Let’s make this year full of optimism and cheer!
